Review: The Living Room in Calgary, Alberta

Interactive cuisine experiences can be memorable and fun.  The Living Room in Calgary, Alberta on 17th Avenue SW offers a trip for the senses and a multitude of conversation starters – particularly when sharing the delicious cheese fondue for which the restaurant is well-known.

The atmosphere at The Living Room is casual chic – a large patio welcomes you, with fireplaces on opposite sides and overhead heaters for those cooler days and nights. Inside, the decor continues the upscale casual mood with plush seating and dark wood tables.

The menu is multicultural, with ingredient blends that make you want to try everything. Alas – if only our stomachs were as big as our eyes.

Accompaniments for the cheese fondue

A must-try is the cheese fondue ($15 per person) – the sharp eight year old cheddar melted with black truffle shavings, black truffle oil, and herbs. Served with pieces of a white baguette and bread sticks, you can add meats, pasta, seafood or vegetarian options at an additional cost.

The aged cheddar cheese fondue is addictive

Togarashi Spiced Magrét Duck Breast ($34) is a blend of savory and sweet, with exotic flavours of citrus roasted almonds, bok choy, tangerine soy glaze and sweet and sour pickled kumquats paired together with the meat. It’s beautifully presented on top of soba noodles.

The Organic Lamb – a blend of Mediterranean flavours makes this a delicious, hearty dish.

The Ewe-nique Farms Organic Lamb ($32) plays with Mediterranean flavours, with grilled tomatoes, fresh tomato relish, large pieces of peppered, slightly salty feta and paired with rice and legumes. The lamb is grilled on a skewer with pieces of red onion – it’s succulent and flavourful, requiring no further embellishments. Once again, this dish makes you work as you slip the meat off the skewer.

The dessert selections are rich in chocolate, mousses, brulees, and ice creams. There’s something for everybody to finish off the meal.

Presentation is key at The Living Room – and the taste is excellent

The Living Room is a great spot for anybody who enjoys an adventure with their food – from the multicultural menu options, to how some of the dishes lend themselves to sharing with others at your table. Food presentation is key at this restaurant, and it makes for a memorable meal every time.

You may want to finish off your visit with The Living Room’s signature drink “The Shaft” – three shots of espresso, a shot of Kahlua, milk and ice. It’s a favourite among locals and goes down smooth.
