And it’s time to participate in the annual tradition where you pick your own apples in Ontario. We’re lucky that there are many pick your own apples near Toronto!
Grandparents and parents take kids to see where food really comes from. They enjoy a few hours on a farm, in the fresh air and load up on Ontario apples that will be eaten as is, cooked or baked into delicious apple crumbles and pies.
Heading out for apple picking is a tradition for many. Now that we have our little guy, we hope to make it an annual tradition for us as well.
Froottogo is Our Go-to for Apples
One of the spots for picking your own apples in Ontario that we visited a few years ago on a crisp, fall afternoon is the very busy Frootogo in Waterdown. It’s not too far from the Hamilton, Burlington and Oakville areas, and so it attracts many visitors from the region. It’s also a great stop if you are booting around the area checking out waterfalls and trails.
The orchard was packed with people during our visit. It’s a perfect spot for families, but you need patience to deal with the long line-ups for the cashiers!
You can pick your own apples or purchase pre-picked bushels. Squash and other fresh produce were also on sale. On weekends, to avoid the crowds you may want to arrive early at 10:00 a.m.Nevertheless, it’s a cool experience and chance to really get food from field to your table. For families with kids, it’s an opportunity to teach them where their food comes from and to take memorable photos.

- Layer your clothes as apple-picking can make your break a sweat.
