The Taste of Burlington 2014, summer edition, is starting soon! Starting on July 20th and running through to August 3, 2014, it’s the food-lovers adventure in this lovely city just 30 to 40 minutes west of Toronto.
I had the privilege of participating in the launch event on June 26th, as part of the local media and bloggers, helping promote the event and tourism in Burlington, Ontario.
As if this would be difficult to write about! I love food – anybody that knows me can attest to my enjoyment of a delicious meal. Over the past few years I’ve written about some of my local dining experiences in the Burlington and surrounding area, including some of the restaurants participating in this year’s Taste of Burlington. After the launch event, I may have to go back to reassess the menu offerings at several restaurants.
At the launch event, we had the chance to sample one dish from twenty Burlington restaurants. There were appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts. Oakville-based Cameron’s Brewery supplied delicious beer to try – I’ve found a love for their Lager.
Making my way around the two rooms with fellow bloggers, Christine Pantazis of ChristinePantazis.com, Chanry Thach of The Hungry Gnome and David Ramnarine of Goat Roti Chronicles, I tried samples from participating restaurants. Several restaurants had run out of food by the time I got to them – a lesson in always being prepared to serve more than expected if you have people coming back for seconds!
As the launch event included a People’s Choice vote, it was important to try from each restaurant. Not a difficult thing to do!
Personally, if I was to vote for best salad/appetizer it would go to Water St. Cooker for their seasonal greens which were presented simply with a zesty vinaigrette and consisted of organic vegetables. You could taste the sweetness of the tomato. While it may have been so-so looking in presentation (how great can a sample salad look, really?), it made up in flavour. I want a whole plate of this!
For a main dish, the winner in my opinion was originally only Ivy Kitchen’s Duck Pastrami slider, but having sneaked in a taste of Stone House’s pecan-encrusted salmon with a honey mustard sauce, I had to amend it to a tie.
Hands down, the winner for dessert would be Queen’s Head Pub’s caramel pretzel and peanut butter ice cream with a bruleed peach slice. Divine!
