Review: Bitten on Locke Street

We were warned before hand, by the sales clerk at Ceylon Tea Bush – “When you enter the store, you get this most amazing smell”, he said. He was true to his word. As soon as we entered Bitten on Locke Street in Hamilton, we were met with the scent of vanilla, sugar, cocoa, strawberries… your dream come true if you have a sweet tooth. This cupcake and whoopie pie shop not only smells good, but also produces some of the best desserts we’ve had in a long time.

Bitten on Locke Street

My mother-in-law, with her sensitive tastebuds and nose, agrees. If she gives the delectable cupcakes and whoopie pies a thumbs up, the ladies at Bitten – Sarah and Rebecca – are doing something very right.

Our impulse reason for stepping into Bitten was my mother-in-law’s birthday. We decided to forgo a large cake and instead requested six different cupcakes¬† from Bitten – $15 for the half-dozen. Freshly baked and decorated cupcakes are on display for your choosing. Since they all look so good, it can be difficult if you’re trying to keep to only six… you may lose your willpower and go for an even dozen ($27).

We purchased two I Love Lucy whoopie pies, one Hunk of Burning Love (peanut butter, banana and bacon) and a few that aren’t on the regular menu: a red velvet cupcake with white, cheesecake icing; a butterscotch and Skor bar cupcake that my mother-in-law raved about; and a lemon cupcake with strawberry icing, topped with a ju-jube. Some of these cupcakes were part of the Valentine’s Day special menu.

I fell in love with the Hunk of Burning Love cupcake as it satisfied my craving for sweet and savoury. This might be the perfect cupcake for PMSing women craving sweet and salty foods. I had a nibble of my mother-in-law’s butterscotch and Skor bar cupcake and found it to be a bit on the drier side and not as sweet as mine. It was still perfection.

Bitten on Locke Street - cupcakes and whoopie pies

All flavours were delicious with just enough sweetness, moistness and size to make them a perfect after lunch dessert with tea. Would we go back for more? Most definitely – we’re already looking for another occasion to celebrate with Bitten cupcakes and whoopie pies. I might have to come up with a few reasons to pop in sooner than later.

Note: You can order ahead online or by calling in – minimum six cupcakes, and two days before pick-up.
