A Review of Ambassade Hotel in Amsterdam

This review of Ambassade Hotel in Amsterdam is based solely on my personal experience with no compensation provided by the hotel.

Nothing beats staying at a great hotel when visiting a foreign country. Being a tourist can be tough on the body, after all!  There are a few factors that make for an amazing hotel stay when I travel:

  • Comfortable accommodations: good mattress on the bed, clean linens, a roomy bathroom
  • Amenities: is there free Wifi? Room service? Options for breakfast?
  • Friendly, helpful staff: are they courteous? Do they smile? Do they look like they enjoy working with people? Do they go out of their way to make sure your stay is the best you’ve ever had?
  • Vicinity of the hotel to key attractions and places you want to visit

My recent stay at the four-star Ambassade Hotel in Amsterdam covered off all key points listed above.

I was impressed even before I got to the hotel! In setting up my reservation, I had asked for restaurant recommendations and received an email with a list. Reservations for dinner at two different restaurants were arranged by the hotel for a couple of the nights I was staying there, taking that one task off my mind.

Staff – from the concierge to the cleaning personnel – were all friendly, helpful and made me feel very welcome.

The hotel itself has much character. It’s comprised of ten 17th century homes combined together, located on the quiet canal of Herengracht, within short walking distance of the busy Centrum area and the Dam. While everything is modern in the hotel rooms, the decor is reminiscent of past times. Modern artwork hangs on the walls, but the feel is of a grand, traditional hotel.

Breakfast, which costs approximately EUR 17.50 is served in the elegant breakfast room with a view of the canal through large windows. The breakfast spread is very generous with many options including cereals, fruit, smoked salmon and trout, tomatoes, cucumbers, a platter of cheeses and deli meats, breads…  the list goes on. You can also order eggs to your liking, as well as pancakes.

The location of the Ambassade Hotel makes it perfect for tourists. It’s located on the picturesque, historic western canals making for easy wandering around in this area. Not far from the quieter Jordaan as well as the Museum area of Amsterdam, it makes for a great base for tourist activities. In the surrounding area, shoppers can spend hours in shops of the “Nine Streets”.

A rainmaker shower head and bathtub provide options for relaxation after a long day of touring Amsterdam.
