Top Ten Beaches in Canada Plus Two More

A little while ago, Tripadvisor.ca released the top beaches in the world and listed also the top ten beaches in Canada.

Looking at the Canadian list, you can’t disagree that the beach in Tofino, British Columbia is tops. Beaches in this province dominate the list. However, I believe two great Ontario beaches were omitted from the list.

Tripadvisor.ca’s list is as follows:

  1. Tofino, British Columbia
  2. Okanagan Valley, British Columbia (yes, it has a beach!)
  3. Parksville, British Columbia
  4. Cavendish, Prince Edward Island
  5. Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
  6. Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
  7. Sunshine Coast, British Columbia
  8. Wasaga Beach, Ontario
  9. Harrison Springs, British Columbia
  10. Galliano Island, British Columbia

I would argue that number 11 on this list should be Port Burwell Beach in Port Burwell Provincial Park and number 12 should be Long Point at Long Point Provincial Park on Lake Erie. Both beaches have long stretches of beige sand and beautiful waters.

While Long Point is a favourite for many (even on weekdays during the summer), Port Burwell Beach is also a great spot to escape the summer heat. The best time to visit this beach is on a weekday when few people are crowding the sandy stretch.

What I like about these two beaches are the camping facilities – you can enjoy them for more than one day and get your camping fix at the same time. There’s nothing like sleeping with the sound of waves hitting the shoreline.

For Torontonians desiring to escape the city for the sun and beach, I would recommend going west to these two locations this summer. Along the way you get to see small quaint towns, farmers’ markets and stands along the side the of road, and a bit of the landscape of southwestern Ontario.

Two towns to visit in the area are Port Stanley, Ontario, just west of Port Burwell, and Port Dover, just east of Long Point. Both are picturesque and offer a reprieve from the sun and water.

Now if only Mother Nature could hurry up with the sun and warm temperatures! Summer is only a few months away!

  1. I’ve been to 5 of these beaches! Yay me!

  2. Been to 5 myself from one coast to the other. My favourite is Cape Breton Highland Nat’l. Tofino is a close second and Long Point is third. Nothing like the outdoors.

  3. Sandbanks is my number one. who knew Lake Ontario could be so warm and clear? If you see two Canada chairs that could be us too.

    • I’ll keep my eye out! Sandbanks is a great spot for sure, particularly if you live on the eastern part of Toronto and need to get away from city life.
