The Royal Coachman in Waterdown

We recently ventured out of the the Burlington area to try a classic British-style pub in Waterdown, Ontario called The Royal Coachman. In a nutshell, this place is a hot spot in this region. The lunch crowd on a Saturday afternoon surpasses any that we’ve seen in other pubs west of Toronto.

The Food Rules at The Royal Coachman

What makes this such a popular place? Simply put, it’s the delicious food. The menu is extensive. There’s so much to choose from, most of which is traditional pub food. Some unique offerings include Pan Fried Pickerel and Asian Shrimp Salad. Grilled Chicken Melts are offered in three different ways: BBQ Chicken, Teriyaki Chicken or Tuscan Chicken. Choices, choices!

There are also a few “light fare” options. I tried the Bruschetta Chicken Wrap ($9.95) with French fries, with a side order of coleslaw ($2.50). Frank went traditional and tried The Coachman’s Club ($9.95). Our meals arrived very quickly.

After only a few bites, we were smiling from ear-to-ear. Although the menu stands out with interesting offerings, it’s the use of fresh ingredients and nice plating that takes it up a notch.

The Bruschetta Chicken Wrap is a grilled chicken breast, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese and Bruschetta topping. The coleslaw is fresh, tasty and not overly creamy.

Meanwhile, The Coachman’s Club is decadent, with pieces of grilled chicken breast, and crisp bacon. Frank gave it two thumbs up.

Atmosphere That Induces Chats With Strangers

As the staff set a friendly mood among guests, it’s no wonder that you find yourself chatting with strangers seated next to you. The older couple sitting next to us was sharing an order of the Fish & Chips ($10.95). They told us that they come to The Royal Coachman on a regular basis. They love the Fish & Chips because it’s delicious and the portion size is very generous. It’s perfect for sharing for a couple who wants to enjoy the taste, but is watching the calorie intake.

We had a hard time hearing our neighbours talking. The only drawback to this pub on a Saturday afternoon is the noise level due to the many customers enjoying the good food. If you are looking for a quiet meal, this is not the place.

We like the location and the menu offerings, which are perfect after a morning of hiking or apple picking at nearby Frootogo in the fall.
