When in Amsterdam… the nightlife calls you. A few years ago, myself, my client and our media and bartender guests were exploring Amsterdam at night.
We were passing by lit stores and galleries as we made our way from restaurant to bar, to bar… to lounge and so on. The proverbial bar/lounge crawl. Trying out the best Amsterdam has to offer when it comes to drinks and cocktails. I can’t recall how much genever – the national alcoholic beverage of the Netherlands – the guests drank that night.
It was that good of a night, but I was only sipping a bit… after all, somebody had to keep an eye on things.
Taking In the Scene With My Camera
I had my camera with me, snapping photos whenever I could along the way, without losing my party.
As we were exploring Amsterdam at night, I was noticing things that I would normally not during the day.
One of the things we passed was an art gallery with an interesting life-sized doll, dressed in a funky outfit. She was reclining, as if she was perhaps a bit too tipsy from Amsterdam’s nightlife and taking a little rest.
Since the photo is pretty clear and not too blurry, it was taken before my hand got just a bit wobbly from being slightly tipsy.
Exploring Amsterdam At Night: The Crazy Nightlife
We continued exploring Amsterdam at night, late into the next day.
At another point, we walked into one of the streets in Leidesplein. The crowd was spilling out of restaurants and clubs at 2 a.m. A few after hours spots were pumping music and serving up amazing cocktails.
You had to keep an eye out for the drunks, trying to find an unused public urinal. And you also had to make sure you didn’t bump into one of the many bicycles leaning up against a row of them.
Private bars, with code words to get in, were at thing in Amsterdam at the time of my visit. I was people watching, something that can be very fun to do when having a cocktail.
I spotted what was a first date. This couple was staring at each other, with body language showing their intimacy. I couldn’t help but snap the photo.
Exploring Amsterdam at night is a completely different experience than playing tourist in the day.
The red light district is a post on it’s own. The city doesn’t go to sleep. I’d do it all over again, even if it was to do a bit of dancing and enjoying a few delicious genever cocktails.

Until next time!
