We all talk about Fall decor and getting ready for the winter season. But, if you want to make your home smell like Fall, where do you start?
There are many types of Fall scents, and they create moods. While many of these are found in candles, the safer route is with essential oils.
In this post, I’ll share a list of the quintessential Fall scents for the home, tips on the best, healthiest way to release the scent in your home, and a recipe for my favourite Fall scent blend that’s easy to create.

Best Scents That Make Your Home Smell Like Fall
These Fall scents are the quintessential scents associated with the season. They evoke a variety of moods and balance out the dusty, earthy, decaying scents you find in nature at this time of year.
There’s a bit of a vintage feel to them, as we associate many of these with foods and activities from bygone eras.
My favourites are vanilla, apple pie and cedarwood for various rooms and moods.
Here are the top Fall scents for the home:
Cinnamon
- Warm, spicy and reminiscent of Fall baking such as cinnamon rolls, coffee cakes and chai tea.
- It’s a rich, comforting aroma that pairs well with other scents, creating a warm, cozy atmosphere.
- Use it in living rooms and kitchens for a cozy, homey mood.
Pumpkin Spice
- The quintessential autumn vibe, blending pumpkin, nutmeg and clove, creating a hint of sweetness.
- It reminds people of pumpkin pies, spiced lattes, and works well for a room with pumpkin seasonal decor.
- Use it in your dining area for a relaxed, communal mood.

Apple Pie
- Sweet and slightly tart, baked apples, cinnamon, and buttery crust notes.
- Brings back warm memories of family gatherings and time spent in an apple orchard.
- Use it in entryways or dining areas to welcome guests.
Star Anise
- Warm, spicy and sweet, it’s exotic and it evokes cozy kitchens, crisp evenings and mulled wine
- It’s paired often with other Fall spices in baked goods and drinks, such as pumpkin-based recipes and chai
- Use in simmer pots for a lovely-smelling kitchen and living room
Vanilla
- A sweet, creamy fragrance that softens the space and doesn’t overpower.
- It pairs nicely with Apple Pie, cloves and cinnamon for a balanced, inviting atmosphere.
- Use it in bathrooms and small spaces – it’s perfect for a powder room.
Cedarwood
- Earthy, grounding and perfect for a rustic fall feel: it brings the scents of the natural outdoors into the home.
- It’s subtly rich, complementing other Fall scents, creating a rustic, natural feel for a serene atmosphere.
- Use it in bedrooms and reading nooks for a calm, grounded effect.
Sandalwood
- Rich and woody, with a sweet undertone, creating a sophisticated, luxurious autumn ambiance.
- It smells like crisp, autumn air, and sitting by the fireside, making it perfect for minimalist home settings.
- Use it in home offices or living room settings.
Why Are These Fall Smells So Appealing?
Let’s explore why these scents are associated with the Fall season:
- These Fall scents are connected to nature’s transition: they have undertones that make us think of falling leaves, crisper air and harvest season.
- They also tap into our emotional side, including feelings of nostalgia, memories of family gatherings and relaxing cool weekend days.
- Their warm, spicy and earthy profiles align well with the Fall cozy aesthetic, creating an inviting mood for the home.
What Is The Best Way To Add Fall Scents In Your Home?
While diffusers and scented candles may be popular, there are some health concerns related to them. Improper usage and, in some cases, poor-quality products can have a negative effect.
So what are some of the smarter ways to infuse your home with these scents?
- Diffusers: Electric or reed diffusers for consistent, safe scent distribution. However, be careful not to use too much of your essential oil for negative effects. Ventilate your space well.
- Room Sprays: Mix essential oils with water and a carrier (e.g., witch hazel) for quick bursts of scent.
- Potpourri or Sachets: Add oils to dried herbs or flowers for a subtle, long-lasting fragrance.
- DIY Candles: Use natural waxes (soy or beeswax) infused with essential oils for a clean burn.
I prefer the room spray method and sachets, as they are the easiest and safest way to add a lovely autumn scent to the room.
The sachets work well as they are unobtrusive and can be hidden away.
Safety Tips For Essential Oils
Quality and attention to quantities matter when it comes to essential oils. Here are key tips to remember when using them to scent your home this Fall:
- Use quality essential oils that don’t have any synthetic additives
- Make sure to dilute your essential oil to avoid aggravating your skin and to reduce the potency of the scent
- Always use proper ventilation when using essential oils and sprays
DIY Scent Recipe: Easy Cozy Autumn Spray
This spray is super easy to put together in a matter of minutes. You’ll need a glass bottle with a spray nozzle. They’re easy to find online.
Ingredients
- 5 drops cinnamon essential oil
- 3 drops clove essential oil
- 3 drops orange essential oil
- 2 drops cedarwood essential oil
- 4 oz water
- 1 tsp witch hazel
Instructions
- Combine water, witch hazel, and essential oils in a 4 oz spray bottle.
- Shake well before each use.
- Spritz lightly in the air or on linens (test fabrics first).
By using better non-synthetic ingredients, it’s better for your health. The use of orange here is a bit of a spicy boost, which is balanced by the relaxing cedarwood.

I love pumpkin mixed with the scent of vanilla. Iโm also a sucker for sweet almond scented candles.
Oooh.. sweet almond sounds like it would smell heavenly. Isn’t it crazy how all the best-smelling candles smell like food? Especially in the Fall season?
I make an orange cinnamon vanilla pot boil every fall and the entire house smells like a bakery! Makes me always feel like those cool weather months have come to stay when I make my home smell like spiced baked goods.
Love that scent mix – I’ll have to try this!
