In recent years, I’ve fallen in love with the idea of not going anywhere for New Year’s Eve. If you’re like me, it’s time to look at some ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve at home.

Because the home is where the party’s at in 2023.

The best thing is that you can make it as fun as as memorable as you like it, and be safely in bed right after midnight (if you wish).

Even if you’re keeping it lowkey, you CAN still make your New Year’s Eve a special one.

I’ve got a long list of 30 ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve at home for you!

30 Ways To Celebrate New Year’s Eve At Home

Whether it’s you alone, with your partner and kids, live-in friends/roommates or a special someone, I’ve come up with fun, productive and relaxing ways to make the day a bit out of the ordinary.

The goal is to make it memorable because 2023 has certainly made us want to create some awesome memories and traditions along the way.

We always try and make it a fun time for our little guy who is old enough to remember these kinds of nights. It’s going to be a late evening for him!

Here are some of my favourite ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve at home that may inspire you too.

Make It A Crazy Fun Time

  • Get dressed up to the nines. Make cocktails or mocktails and pretend you’re throwing a cocktail party for yourself. Start with a Manhattan cocktail (it’s sooo classy!)
  • Cook up a fancy feast with foods you’d normally not eat regularly – hors d’oeuvres, charcuterie – heck even a lobster and steak dinner if you can afford it, whatever you desire.
  • Throw a crazy dance party with the best pop party tunes. Light it up with cool LED lights if you have them.
  • Do a Netflix, Plex or other streaming TV/movie party.
  • End the year off on a high note – break out what you’ve been saving for a while. A good bottle of Scotch whisky, expensive chocolates, or something else that’s delicious.
  • Keep it lowkey: try your hand at playing chess or checkers.
  • Shop online using any gift cards or money you received for the Holidays. Treat yourself to something nice.
  • Have sex! But not just any sex. Try something exciting and new (or old – the Kama Sutra can be fun).
  • Brush off the old video game console and play classic games solo or against an opponent.
  • Make brunch for dinner. Break out the waffle maker, make bacon… whatever your heart desires. Make sure you have mimosas!
  • Go for a little drive in the evening to look at the Holiday lights before they’re taken down for the season.
  • Go old school and play card games or board games.
  • Colour your hair a funky hue and break out the sparkly make-up.
  • Pick one liquor bottle and come up with different types of cocktails with it.
  • If you’ve got kids, let them stay up as long as they can! Make fun treats, bake cookies, and break the rules a bit.
  • Get your neighbours in on the fun! Plan ahead with them to go outside at midnight and wish each other a Happy New Year! Bring out a drink to do a “cheers!”.

Reflect & Connect

  • Record a video looking back on the year. Make it a simple production or go all out. After all, you’ve got time at home to be as crazy as you want with it. If you can post it to social media if it’s a short video.
  • Go through the photos from the year, mark your favourites and order them for online prints. Relive your favourite memories from 2023!
  • Call or video chat with your parents and siblings. Give them your love and attention. It’s a hard time of the year for them if they’ve always celebrated with you and your family.
  • Reach out to a single friend who’s celebrating alone. Spend time with them over the phone or video chat.

Chill Out And Relax… All Day

  • Start a movie marathon in the morning of the top trilogies, or James Bond films (or whatever you like).
  • Do a laugh-a-thon – watch funny videos, movies (there are so many series comedies to choose from, or from funny directors like Mel Brooks)
  • If you have a turntable, listen to your old albums while enjoying a nice drink.
  • Be good to your body by focusing on relaxation. It’s been a stressful year. Treat it well for the evening by doing some relaxing yoga stretches and deep breathing.
  • Screw it! Go to bed early with freshly changed bed sheets after a long, leisurely shower or bath.
  • Get a head start on your New Year’s Resolutions – go for an evening walk if the weather permits.
  • Pamper yourself with an at-home spa session and some winter self-care.

Be Productive

  • Get started planning your new side hustle for 2024. Whether it’s starting a blog, an online-based business, or a product you can sell. Whatever it is, start planning so that you can make it happen in the New Year!
  • Make a crazy, fun New Year’s Resolution list of things that are silly that you want to achieve in 2024.
  • Get a head-start on your new 2024 hobby.

Don’t Dwell On The Negatives During Your New Year’s Eve At Home

Whatever you decide to do, make it a FUN time. We’ve had an awful year, but we’ve made it to this point.

With little kids around, it’s even more important to be positive and to give them hope.

If you’re feeling down, and you need to reach out to somebody, call your family. Call your friends. If you need more than them, call a mental health helpline in your area. It will help to speak with somebody.

Here’s to your 2024 is BETTER than 2023!
