Doing productive things during a snowstorm makes the day not feel like a waste. This is especially important for anybody who always needs to be busy.

  • Order prints of digital photos on your phone.
  • Clean out and refold your clothes in your cupboards.
  • Match unmatched socks.
  • Do all your laundry. All! Even items that you’ve put off washing.
  • Get the dust rag and clean all surfaces.
  • Shovel the snow, and shovel some more.
  • Depending on the time of winter: do Holiday shopping online, or Valentine’s Day shopping.
  • Cook up meals to freeze for convenient dinners.
  • Catch up with your family members over the phone.
  • Clean appliances and other items in your home that you usually clean only once in a while. Take advantage of the extra free time to get it all done.

  • Freshen up your kitchen and bathroom drains with vinegar and baking soda.
  • Take one room and organize it: declutter, sorting items to donate and throw away.

  • File any paperwork that’s laying around, such as bills and invoices.
  • Make a bit of extra cash online: do surveys, reviews with companies such as Swagbucks, UserTesting.
  • Clean your shoes and boots: get out the polish!
  • Sort out stuff in your front closet: if it’s anything like mine, it’s a dark pit where scarves and mittens go to hide.
  • Organize your emails: open unopened ones, delete those that aren’t needed.
  • Redecorate your home without spending a dime: move your photos/images around.
  • Get organized: create an “important stuff” drawer with things you always need but always misplace.

  • Get things together for your taxes.
  • Grind up sensitive documents and envelopes you no longer need.

Be Prepared For Snowstorms

In December 2013, Toronto and parts of Southern Ontario were hit by a very bad ice storm. It took many people off guard as they weren’t expecting to have power outages and the inability to travel. So, anybody who hadn’t stocked up with food and water quickly noticed their problem.

Although I love snowstorms because they give me permission to just have a fun time at home, we are always prepared for the potential of a power outage and being snowed in.

Tips for preparedness include:

  • Have enough water for three days as well as no-heat requiring food (for everybody in the family)
  • Keep an old-school radio with working batteries
  • A portable battery phone charger charged up and ready to go. I like to have at least 2 or 3 of these charged up at all times.
  • Battery-operated lights and flashlights: candles can cause fires, so use them as a last resort.
  • Have heat packs to keep your hands warm
  • Ensure your shovels are in good working order and you have rock salt for slippery spots

When you’re prepared, you’re able to enjoy doing things during a snowstorm that are relaxing, fun, or productive without as many worries. So when the next storm comes, have a great time!
