The Best Rustic Guacamole Recipe You’ll Ever Make
I love guacamole. It’s my favourite dip of all time. While some like guacamole dip creamed to a smooth paste, I like my rustic guacamole recipe. It’s full of chunks that you can scoop up with a nice firm tortilla chip. It makes for an amazing topping for toast that’s beyond a simple mashed avocado.
As well, it makes for a delicious addition to chicken sandwiches or burgers. I like to sometimes top it on my baked chicken breast for added flavour.
When it comes to cutting, slicing, peeling and pitting an avocado, there are a few tricks you can use. The Haas Avocado board has some good tips on how to do this without cutting yourself. Those avocados can be dangerous if not handled properly! But don’t let that dissuade you from trying out my rustic guacamole recipe.
A Healthy Dip For Snacking & Entertaining
Although my husband and I both love my rustic guacamole dip as a snack, we never make it for family members. They just don’t seem to like the idea of smashed avocados. A shame, because the avocado is so healthy for you!
When it comes to nutrients and good stuff, avocados are amazing.
- Low carbohydrates
- High in heart-healthy fats
- Chock full of important vitamins and minerals
Avocados are one of the best fruits around. Yes, it’s a super fruit. It’s no wonder they have such a huge following.
But enough of the healthy talk. Let’s talk about this rustic guacamole recipe itself.
I started making it about 15 years ago, and continue to tweak it with a few ingredients here and there. However, the key thing is to not over smush the avocado and add beefier vegetables to give it a chunkier texture.
I like to include this guacamole dip with other spreads, such as my herbed cottage cheese spread, when I’m hosting a casual get-together.
The Best Rustic Guacamole Recipe
I like to keep it simple with ingredients I have on hand in my fridge or cupboard. This recipe is super easy to whip together in a matter of five minutes.
For the best result, use avocados that have just ripened. The light green colour makes it so pretty for serving.
Make it just before you serve it so that the avocado doesn’t turn that ugly brown after a little while. And you can customize it with hot sauce and cilantro. I’m not a stickler on these two things!
Rustic Guacamole Recipe
- 2 ripe avocados (Haas)
- 1 medium tomato, diced – seeds removed
- 1/2 medium red onion, diced
- 1/4 cup chopped cilantro (optional)
- 1 tbsp lemon or lime juice
- 1/2 tbsp Frank’s Red Hot Sauce or your favourite hot sauce to taste
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp cumin
- Salt and pepper to taste
Pit the avocados and cut them into chunks. Add the avocado chunks into a medium bowl. Mash with a fork until slightly broken down. The texture should be creamy with chunks of avocado. Add all ingredients and stir until mixed but the texture is still chunky.
Makes 4 servings.
TIP: You can add more lemon or lime juice if you prefer the taste to be zestier and the texture thinner.
TIP 2: I like to use Frank’s Red Hot Sauce, but you can use whatever sauce you prefer to your own taste.
What Foods To Pair With Guacamole
Aside from the yummy pairing of tortilla chips with my rustic guacamole recipe, I like to use it with other foods.
- Plantain chips
- Crackers when you’ve got not tortilla chips in the home
- Toasted flatbread crisps
- Homemade baked flatbread chips
- Veggie platters (broccoli florets, cauliflower, baby carrots, celery sticks)
- Paired with roasted potatoes, as a topping
- A substitute for mayonnaise or ketchup for your fries
- As a dip for vegetable fritters or patties, or corn cakes
- Topping for breakfast egg dishes
- As a spread for toast
- A replacement for mayonnaise for sandwiches
- Instead of spreadable cheese in a celery stick
- As a condiment for burgers, pita or flatbread sandwiches
- Paired with grilled cheese – either as a dip or as an ingredient
- A topping for your Mexican-inspired salad
I like to whip up a bowl of guacamole for breakfast with eggs, as the pairing is just so natural. It goes well with eggs as well as toast.
Even though there are many delicious ways to use guacamole, my favourite is still the simple tortilla and rustic guacamole recipe pairing.
