Review: The Royal Coachman in Waterdown

We recently ventured out of the the Burlington area to try a classic British-style pub in Waterdown, Ontario called The Royal Coachman. In a nutshell – this place is a hot spot in this region, with the lunch crowd on the weekends surpassing any that we have seen in other pubs west of Toronto on a Saturday afternoon.

What makes this such a popular place? Simply put, it’s the delicious food. The menu is extensive – there’s so much to choose from, most of which is traditional pub food. Some unique offerings include Pan Fried Pickerel and Asian Shrimp Salad. Grilled Chicken Melts are offered in three different ways: BBQ Chicken, Teriyaki Chicken or Tuscan Chicken. Choices, choices!

There are also a few “light fare” options – I tried the Bruschetta Chicken Wrap ($9.95) with French fries, with a side order of coleslaw ($2.50). Frank went traditional and tried The Coachman’s Club ($9.95). Our meals arrived very quickly – perhaps it was my camera that made the waitress think I was a restaurant reviewer. Or perhaps it’s just a testament to great service and a quick kitchen staff.

After only a few bites of our meals, we were smiling from ear-to-ear. The food is delicious, with fresh ingredients and nicely plated.

The Bruschetta Chicken Wrap is light – grilled chicken breast, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese and Bruschetta. The coleslaw is a perfect side order – fresh, tasty and not overly creamy. The Coachman’s Club is decadent, with pieces of grilled chicken breast, and crisp bacon. Frank gave it two thumbs up.

The older couple sitting next to us was sharing an order of the Fish & Chips ($10.95). They apparently come to The Royal Coachman on a regular basis because they find the Fish & Chips delicious and the portion size is very generous – perfect for a couple who wants to enjoy the taste, but is watching the calorie intake.

The only drawback to this pub on a Saturday afternoon is the noise level due to the many customers enjoying the good food. If you are looking for a quiet meal, this is not the place.
